How To Fix a Garage Door That Won’t Open

It is not helpful when you are trying to get in or out of your garage, but suddenly, the door won’t open. Luckily, these quick tips will help you find the issue and how to fix it.

Check the Manual Release

The manual release is located towards the front of your garage, it is a brightly colored hanging cord. You should check your garage’s manual release if you can hear your garage door motor running, but the door won’t open. Once you pull the cord, the garage door will disengage from the motor, making it manually operated. Pulling the cord again will engage the door and motor, and both should work smoothly now.

Check For a Broken Spring

The torsion springs are usually located right above the garage door. The tension in these springs is what gets the heavy garage door moving up and down. If you hear your garage door trying to open, but it does not, you need to inspect the torsion springs. There should not be any gaps between the coils of the springs. If this is the case, you need to hire a professional since fixing the spring can be very dangerous. This is because the spring stores a lot of energy and can lead to a safety issue if you do not know how to properly fix it.

Check the Tracks

You should also check the tracks on the side of your garage doors to see if they are properly aligned and lubricated. If you see any of these issues, make sure to properly align the tracks. Additionally, use a non-permeable lubricant specifically for garage doors.

Check the Remote

If you are trying to open your garage door with a keypad or remote and nothing happens, you should get them checked out. When it comes to the remote, you should take the following steps to solve the issue:

1. If you try to use your remote, and no lights are coming on, you need to change the batteries.

2. Make sure that the garage door opener is not locked. If the wall-mounted door opener has a blinking green light, hold the lock button for a few seconds and everything should work normally.

3. If you are still running into issues, check for any signal interference. To test this, try opening the garage door with the remote directly in front of the motor. If the garage door opens, you will need to check what electronic is interfering with the remote.
